It came into fashion during Queen Victoria’s reign and those living in London would spend their summer holidays here. Throughout the 1800’s many new facilities were built these included the railway line between Shankin and Ryde, a cliff lift and Shanklin pier which was unfortunately destroyed in the storms in 1987. Below, we’ll take a look at just a few of the places you can stay in Shanklin.
1. Belmont – This was originally a Victorian gentleman’s residence before being converted into a hotel. Situated in the Old Village, it is close to the seafront and is open throughout the year with thirteen well appointed rooms. The rooms within this hotel either look out towards the sea or over look out over the hotels garden. There is a veranda to relax on and there is a heated outdoor pool as well.
2. Bourne Hall Country House Hotel – This property was originally built as home for one of Queen Victoria’s ladies in waiting back in the 1860’s. It is set in 3 acres of mature gardens and has all the comforts one would expect from a large country house as well as the facilities modern day guests have come to expect. If you want a romantic break in peaceful settings this hotel should definitely be on your shortlist.
3. Carlton Hotel – This is situated on the cliffs above Shanklin with panoramic views of Sandown Bay. Although above Shanklin you are only a short walk away from its wonderful sandy beaches and also Shanklin’s Old Village and to stroll along the esplanade. Although the hotel is housed in a Victorian building it has been upgraded and provides you with the kinds of amenities you expect from a modern hotel.
4. Mayfair – This hotel is situated on Shanklin’s Eastcliff Promenade and although the hotel faces towards the sea the terrace and gardens look out towards Nab Tower, Culver Cliff and Sandown Bay. It is within easy walking distance of the seaside beaches and the Old Village. It is also close to Shanklin Chine. If you don’t want to swim in the sea, the hotel has an outdoor pool for you to use during the summer.
5. Luccombe Hall Country House – Surrounded by peaceful gardens high up on the cliffs above Shanklin provides guests with wonderful views out over the sea. As well as having an indoor swimming pool and also a large outdoor one that is heated from the bottom of their large gardens there is access directly to the beach. Much care has been taken on decorating the bedrooms and public areas to ensure that the splendor of this magnificent building have been retained. It is a great place to stay whether you have children or need a relaxing getaway.
