Where to Stay in St Andrews, the Home of Golf

The town of St Andrews situated on the east coast of Fife in Scotland is a place better known for being the home of golf. The Royal and Ancient Golf Club has been in the town since 1754 and which has rules over the game the world over except for America and Mexico. Every year the oldest of the four major golf championships takes place here, namely the Open Championship. 

As well as golf courses, St Andrews also boasts sandy beaches. When it comes to where to stay when visiting St Andrews whether to play a round of golf or just to relax you’ll be spoiled for choice.  Below we take a look at just some of the accommodation that is currently available.

1.     Ardgowan Hotel – This one is situated just 180 yards from St Andrews Old Course and the University, which are in the heart of the town. The building comprises two Georgian houses which have been combined and were designed by the famous Scottish architect Sir William Playfair. You can choose from the hotel’s 19 rooms and you can relax in the private gardens around the hotel. The hotel’s restaurant emphasizes the use of high quality local produce.

2.     Links Hotel – This is located at 1 Golf Place and is not far from the famous 18th Hole on St Andrews Old Course. Although only built in 1824 this hotel has housed many of the world’s top golf players and was host to the very first golf tournaments that took place here.  As well as being very close to the Old Course, you’re also very near the town’s university, cathedral and castle as well. 

3.    Old Course Hotel – As its name suggests. this hotel gives magnificent views of the Old Course and specifically the 17th Hole. It oversees the “Road Hole” and on a clear day you can take in the West Sands and Fife’s magnificent coastline. Although this is for the hotel for the keen golfer the hotel is also proud to cater for non-golfers and has a selection of therapy rooms to relax in, whether you’ve just played a round of golf or not. 

4.    Russell Hotel – The Russell is a terraced house next to the Scores, has views across St Andrews Bay and the hotel has a Victorian theme. When you choose this hotel, you’ll be very near the Old Course, in fact within two minutes of walking you are by the first tee or you can walk the other way and be in the town center just as fast. 

5.    St Andrews Golf Hotel – Another superb choice for a game on the Old Course and some of the rooms offer the guests views that look over St Andrews Links and Bay. In recent years, it’s been turned into a boutique hotel to further help you relax whilst you enjoy the top class facilities that St Andrews and the surrounding area has to offer.
